Pro Fills
INTRODUCTION
Thank you for purchasing Pro Fills volume 1. Now it is easy to have
complex backgrounds in your desktop presentations and add impact to your
titles at the click of a mouse button. There are many time saving features
that will give your presentation the extra edge. Great care was taken when
developing Pro Fills to allow for maximum flexibility.
Begin by making a working backup of the master disk. Pro Fills is not copy
protected in any way so that you may install it on your hard disk or copy
the master disk using the standard diskcopy utilities. Only make copies
for your personal use. Many hours went into making Pro Fills possible.
Please don't pirate this software.
All of the images are IFF standard brushes and are compatible with all IFF
standard software. They may be used for tile functions, fill functions or
freehand painting. Pro Fills Patterns and textures were created so that
the edges are undetectable when filling a large area. Patterns are images
intended to be repeated across the screen. The smallest piece of the
pattern was saved for ease of modification. Textures are images that
appear as random or very small patterns. The patterns and textures were
designed to be easily used together. Experiment by filling open areas of
large patterns with textures to create new variations.
CONTENTS
The Pro Fills disk contains several drawers to maximize speed and handling.
HiRes (dir)
Patterns for high resolution, 640x400 or low resolution, 320x200. Patterns
are grouped by similarity in drawers. The number in the name is an
approximation of the pixel size.
Interlace (dir)
Patterns for interlace resolution, 320x400. Due to the aspect ratio of the
screen pixels in interlace mode, many of the HiRes patterns may appear
distorted and undesirable.
Textures (dir)
Surface textures for use in any resolution.
Palettes (dir)
Color palettes (16 colors) are for use in any resolution with any of the
patterns or textures. All patterns and textures utilize colors 10 through
15 with the prime color being color register 12 (counting 0-15). The
numbers in the name are the RGB value for color 12. Each palette has these
six colors defined as a range. Some programs utilize this feature for easy
drop shadows and highlights.
Examples (dir)
Full screen high resolution pictures to help locate the pattern of your
choice. Double click the icon to view. Double click the mouse to exit
(pointer is transparent). Space bar or ESC key will also exit.
PRO FILLS WITH DELUXE PAINT
Pro Fills may be used with any IFF program. If you are not using
DeluxePaint, please refer to your program's manual for the equivalent
commands. Pro Fills may be used with any of DeluxePaint's brush functions.
Although DeluxePaint has many features for brushes, some of them are not
useful with Pro Fills objects. The original intent for Pro Fills objects
is for use with the fill tool. Pro Fills will work in any resolution, but
they do require at least a 16 color palette.
Pro Fills were designed to work in high resolution and interlace
resolution. The high resolution patterns will also work well in low
resolution, however they will be twice the size.
TUTORIAL
Run DeluxePaint and select high resolution 640x400, 16 color mode.
Choose Load from the Brush menu and the load brush requester will appear.
Insert your working copy of Pro Fills in any drive and select that drive
identifier from the requester.
The disk is divided into two levels of drawers (directories). Select HiRes
(Dir), and then select a pattern drawer such as Tiles (Dir).
The patterns all end with a number such as "Tile.120". This pattern
represents the size of the pattern in pixels, and means that the pattern
will repeat at that increment on the screen. For most patterns the size is
the vertical measurement, although if the pattern is angled or staggered,
the size will be an approximation of reoccurrence. Select and load a
pattern of your choice.
To use the correct palette for the pattern, move up to the Picture Menu and
down to the Change Color option, select Use Brush Palette.
Select the fill tool (third tool on left) with the Right mouse button.
This will call up the Fill Type requester. Click on From Brush in the
center of the requester and then OK.
Now when you use the fill tool or any of the tools that fill an area (Box,
Circle, etc.) it will be filled with the pattern.
CHANGING THE PALETTE
Loading a new palette from the Pro Fills disk is done in the same manner as
loading a pattern. All of the palettes in the Palettes drawer are in the
form of IFF brushes. Load them just as you would a pattern and select Use
Brush Palette from the Change Color option in the Picture Menu as described
above.
MODIFYING PATTERNS
The patterns and textures were designed to have the dominant light source
in the upper left corner of the screen. If you prefer the upper right
color, flip the pattern in the horizontal direction (X-axis) prior to using
it.
Rotating patterns ninety degrees will create a new pattern.
Any pattern or texture may be scaled or stretched. The +/- keys will scale
a brush by 10% up or down respectively. Scaling and stretching patterns
may cause loss of resolution or other undesirable effects.
MOVING COLORS
It is possible to move the color registers used by Pro Fills to a different
location in the palette. First you must save the pattern with the desired
Pro Fills palette. Now arrange the palette so that the colors are in the
new locations. Load the pattern but instead of using the brush palette
from the Picture menu, select Remap from the Brush menu. Remap will change
the pattern to match the current palette as close as possible.
KARA FONT COMPATIBLE
KARA Fonts and other color fonts use the lower eight colors in the color
palette. Pro Fills uses the upper six colors (10-15). To use Pro Fills
and color fonts, start by creating the Pro Fills background and selecting
your Pro Fills palette. Then select your color font and its palette. The
fonts palette will overwrite the lower portion of the Pro Fills palette.
If you select a Pro Fills palette after the color fonts palette, Pro Fills
will overwrite the fonts palette and you will loose the colors of the font.
MIXING PATTERNS AND TEXTURES
You may easily modify any of the patterns using the textures included in the
package. Load the pattern you wish to modify and stamp down one copy of it
on the left side of the screen. Modify it by filling the open areas with a
Pro Fills texture or redrawing any portion of it. Using the magnify tool
as necessary, pick up the pattern as a brush carefully so that you do not
include any background color. Some patterns in their smallest size do not
have enough area to be filled. If this is the case, first fill the
background with the pattern and add the texture later as a separate fill.
Using the filled rectangle tool to check your pattern is quicker than using
the fill tool. The filled rectangle does not need to be enclosed like the
fill tool so the computer is able to display the pattern faster.
DROP SHADOWS
Drop shadows can be created in DeluxePaint by using the shade brush mode.
All Pro Fills Palettes have a defined range of color registers. These
ranges are used for color cycling and other effects. The six color
registers used the registers 10 through 15.
Once you have the background filled with a pattern, change to the spare
page and create or load the brush that you want the drop shadow behind.
pick up the brush and return to the original page. Stamp the brush in the
desired location over the pattern.
Without destroying the brush, select any color in the Pro Fills range. Now
select Shade from the Mode menu. Shade has no effect on colors outside its
range. Stamping the brush in shade mode with the left mouse button will
darken every pixel by one shade. Using the right button will lighten every
pixel in the range.
Now move the brush just slightly to the right and down from its original
location and stamp it down with the left button. The shadow will appear
under the brush and the original colors of the brush will not be effected.
If there are colors in the brush from the Pro Fills range, they will be
effected by the shadow. Select Matte mode to restore the original brush.
You may want to stamp the shadow down more than once to intensify it.
Moving the brush slightly between shadow applications will give your shadow
a softer edge and add to the realism.
